The Longview Fire Department is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week, October 9th through 15th,
2022. This year’s theme is ‘Fire won’t wait – Plan your escape’ and works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those
around them safe from home fires.
“Because modern home furnishings are comprised of plastics, foams, and other materials that burn very vigorously, fires in today’s homes grow larger and hotter much faster than
ever. You may have as little as 2 minutes to escape your home once the smoke alarm sounds,” said Jon Dunaway, Longview’s Fire Marshal. “Having working smoke alarms and a
home fire escape plan greatly enhances your ability to get out of your home safely during a fire.”
Longview Fire wants to share these key home fire escape planning tips:
- Make sure your plan meets the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Smoke alarms should be installed inside every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
- Know at least two ways out of every room, if possible. Make sure all doors and windows open easily.
- Have an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone should meet.
- Practice your home fire drill at least twice a year; one during the day and one at night.
As part of the celebration, the Longview Fire Department will be hosting an open house at the main fire station located at 740 Commerce Avenue on Saturday, October 15th from
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Come tour the fire station, see our newest fire engine and ladder truck, tour an ambulance, and watch firefighters use the ‘jaws of life’ on a car. Kids can
also squirt water from a fire hose and make their own fire safety button, as well as other fun activities.
