Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, a U.S. Congress member representing Washington’s 3rd district since 2023, recently expressed her concerns about legislative developments affecting the national debt and healthcare coverage. Born in Harris County, Texas in 1988, Perez is an alumna of Reed College and currently resides in Washougal.
On July 1, 2025, Rep. Perez voiced her apprehension regarding fiscal policies that could impact future generations. She stated “It burdens our kids with even more reckless debt, adding more than $4 trillion to our national debt over the next decade – a $1 trillion increase from the House bill I voted against.” Her comments reflect a critique of recent legislative actions concerning national financial management.
In another post on the same day, she commented on legislative decisions by the Senate that affect her constituents in Southwest Washington. She remarked “Somehow, the Senate managed to make an already-terrible bill even worse for SW Washington.” This indicates her dissatisfaction with recent amendments made to existing bills.
Further expressing her concerns about healthcare policy changes, Rep. Perez highlighted potential adverse effects on healthcare accessibility for many Americans. In a subsequent tweet, she noted “It strips even more Americans of healthcare coverage, by gutting Medicaid and suffocating hardworking families with even more red tape.” She emphasized that “328,695 people in our state stand to lose healthcare,” which could severely impact rural hospitals across Washington’s 3rd district financially.
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez has been vocal about these issues as part of her congressional responsibilities since taking office in 2023 after succeeding Jaime Herrera Beutler.
