In the aftermath of an unemployment scam that caused hundreds of millions of dollars to be paid out in fake unemployment claims in Washington State, the Better Business Bureau has issued a warning and tips to residents about identity theft.
Washington State Employment Security Department failed to "thoroughly" vet claims as it moved quickly to get out benefits during the current COVID-19 pandemic, KLEW reported. This caused many residents, including Asotin County Fire Chief Noel Hardin, to be affected by the scam after their identity was used to collect fake claims. Much of the money paid out went to a "west African fraud ring," according to KLEW.
The Better Business Bureau Northwest suggests people to be aware of the websites where they are giving out their personal information. The Better Business Bureau also suggests changing passwords often and using an identity theft service.
Victims can report fraud on the Washington State Unemployment website, KLEW reported. Once a fraud report is filled out, the claim process will be stopped immediately.
