Lewiston Transit has received a federal grant to help pay for cleaning supplies, employees to clean, masks and other protective equipment and the money will help supplement the loss of revenue in fare purchases because of fewer riders during the pandemic.

The $1.4 million dollars awarded to Lewiston Transit by the U.S. Department of Transportation is part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"The focus is on COVID-19 related expenditures and other day-to-day operation expenditures that may be difficult to fund as agencies may had a difficult time funding transit due to a loss in local funding," Suzanne Siegneur told the Lewiston Tribune in an email.

Siegener also told the Lewiston Tribune some of the grant will be put towards protecting city busses by building fenced-in area at the Lewiston Community Center. The money will also help pay for other ordinary transit operations.
