If email is too slow of a way to get information on bad weather or other emergencies such as fires, floods and toxic waste spills, Walla Walla Emergency Management now offers real-time text alerts on your mobile device, the Waitsburg Times reported.
“This is just one more tool in the toolbox,” Liz Jessee, emergency management director, told the Waitsburg Times. “The more information we have, the greater the likelihood we’ll be able to reach residents during an emergency.”
The service will allow you to receive public serve announcements and "life-saving emergency information" very quickly, the county said.
Sign up by texting your Walla Walla County zip code to 888777. You will then receive a message asking for your email address. You can receive alerts and advisories both by text and email. Community messages will be sent by email only, Waitsburg Times reported.
It’s a free service, but standard text messaging charges apply.
You can opt out by texting “Stop” to 888777.
