The issue of whether to add Liberty State as the nation’s 51st will not be on the Nov. 4 ballot after the Walla Walla County Commissioners unanimously rejected the proposal at a recent meeting, according to Union-Bulletin.
Supporters hoped to take 20 counties east of the Cascades and make it into a new state, Libery State, separate from Washington. If the commissioners would have greenlighted the plan, Walla Walla would’ve served as the first county to put the matter on the ballot for the upcoming election, letting voters decide the fate and future of Liberty State (recent reports that Colombia County was going to include it in its ballot weren’t correct).
“As you might expect we received a number of emails that had opinions on this,” Commissioner Jim Johnson told Union-Bulletin. He added that its the commissioners’ responsibility to hear out any issues that are raised, even if all involved parties don’t agree.
