Walla Walla Community College issued the following announcement on Dec. 16.

Walla Walla Community College is pleased and honored to announce a $15 million gift from Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

WWCC is privileged to have been identified by Ms. Scott’s team of advisors and experts for supporting our students during the pandemic while also addressing what Ms. Scott identifies as “long term systemic inequities that have been deepened by the crisis, including education for historically marginalized and underserved people.”

“This gift marks a transformational opportunity for our college,” WWCC President Chad Hickox said Tuesday. “Short-term, it will help us to rise to the challenges posed by the pandemic, as we work tirelessly to meet our students’ needs during this extremely challenging time. Long-term, this grant becomes the foundation for ongoing investments in innovation, empowering us not only to dream big for our students and the communities we serve, but to realize those dreams.”

“The WWCC Foundation is deeply grateful for this substantial new investment that builds on decades of ongoing community support for WWCC and our students. This grant underscores what our communities have long known: access to college is key to personal success for our citizens and community prosperity for all,” said WWCC Foundation Executive Director, Jessica Cook.

Over the next few months, the college will consult with the WWCC Foundation’s Board of Governors and the WWCC Trustees, among other stakeholders, about where to target this investment. It will also become part of the college-wide strategic planning process, which began this month.

“We are humbled and so grateful to be among 384 colleges and organizations included as grant recipients,” Hickox said. “This is an historic day for Walla Walla Community College and for the communities we serve.”
