Longview Sister City Commission, Lower Columbia School Gardens and LCC Exchange Students collaborate

The Longview Sister City Commission, in collaboration  with Lower Columbia School Gardens and Lower Columbia College  International Exchange Students, are partnering to bring

a Miso making  project to middle school garden club students.

This project will  offer both cultural and agricultural exposure to the students. Japanese  exchange students will teach how miso is prepared while offering samples  and more about

Japanese culture. "Each week our garden club students  cook a culturally significant meal using seasonal ingredients in  camp-style kitchens out in their school gardens. Having LCC

exchange  students from Japan share miso soup at garden clubs is a brilliant way  to build rich connections in a hands-on manner." Ian Thompson,  Operations Coordinator and

Founder, Lower Columbia School Gardens

Frances  Hearn, ESL/IESL Instructor for the LCC International Education Program  commented, “I’m excited for the miso lessons because it gives the  Japanese students attending

Lower Columbia College the opportunity to  meet with native English speakers, they can share their culture, and  meet new people in our community.”

“Having the Sister City  Commission partnering with Lower Columbia School Gardens is a win for  our community, as it provides students the chance to come together to  learn each

other’s cultures, while instilling the value of growing and  cultivating nourishing foods.” said Longview Councilwoman and Sister  City Liaison Angie Wean.

The Longview Sister City Commission  serves as the primary group to process and make recommendations for  cultural exchanges with sister cities of the City of Longview. The

Commission provides recommendations for activities to further the  cultural diversity and/or economic relations of the City as it relates  to sister cities, and is a central body to whom

parties interested in  cultural activities related to the sister cities may come for  information or assistance
