This week in Southeast Washington history.

Born September 1, 1903

Raymond Paul Flaherty was born on September 1, 1903, near Lamont, Washington. He played college football at Gonzaga University. Flaherty began his professional career in 1926 with the Los Angeles Wildcats. He later played for the New York Yankees and New York Giants. As a player, he was a seven-time First-team All-Pro and led the league in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns in 1932. After retiring, he became head coach of the Boston/Washington Redskins from 1936 to 1942, winning two NFL championships. He also coached the New York Yankees and Chicago Hornets in the All-America Football Conference. Flaherty was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976. His contributions to football are remembered in Lamont and beyond.
