Walla Walla University recently issued the following announcement on Feb 22.

Walla Walla University’s Enactus chapter is one of several student teams from around the world. Enactus chapters create sustainable projects as opportunities for students and volunteers to serve their local community.

This winter quarter, members of Enactus and students in class GBUS 190 worked together to prepare garden beds for spring’s soon arrival. This effort was part of an ongoing project led by students to provide the community a place to learn to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. The garden beds are located at 629 S. College Ave., College Place, near the fire station.

There are about fifteen beds costing $50 each to be leased by locals for the gardening season. WWU students can also lease a bed at a discounted price of $10, and financial aid is available for locals who need extra support. A season opening of the garden will occur on April 3rd as a meet and greet between Enactus and the gardeners.

Megan Lersback, junior business major, is the project manager for the garden. “I came to college to learn entrepreneurial skills and how to start and run a business. Enactus has taught me so much about the aspects of the business world,” Lersback described. She always feels rewarded watching people work in the garden and seeing the project come together.

Enactus is especially interesting to business majors due to the entrepreneurial skills they can attain by participating, including leadership, collaboration, project management, and self-discipline. However, students of all majors and grade levels are welcome to join Enactus.

The name Enactus stands for: “Entrepreneurial action creates a better world for us all.” Faculty advisor, George Perez, assistant professor of management and marketing, pointed out that Enactus is different from many campus clubs because students give rather than receive. “We really appreciate Enactus students taking time from their busy schedule in pursuit of impacting social challenges,” Perez said.

WWU students can join Enactus under the list of clubs or learn more by looking at their website. Those interested in buying a plot in the garden can fill out the registration form.
