Walla Walla County made it possible to text an emergency to the local 911 emergency services.
County officials said the final testing with area wireless providers is completed and that the new "text-to-911 service" is operational, the local NBC Right Now news station reported. People needing emergency services within the county can text their situation directly to dispatchers at the 911 center.
According to NBC Right Now, 17 other centers within the state are currently using the VIPER equipment. Viper is the company that makes the services possible.
The text-to-911 is for use in specific emergencies. The service provides a benefit to residents who are speech or hearing impaired. Additionally, the service is intended for people who are unable to call 911 and are rendered unable to speak to the 911 technician. Moreover, in the event of a crime, like a home invasion where speaking may give away a hiding person's position.
Also, the service is intended for people in a domestic violence situation.
